If you edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, there should be a place for
inputting the driver, and it likely says:
Driver  "nvidia"

Change this to nv

nvidia is the name of the proprietary driver (with 3d GLX capability)
and nv is the open source 2d only driver.

This should allow you to get a 2d accelerated X while you fix the other
problems with your system.
