As a coder, I can understand where these errors come from. Basically, this is the programmer saying something like "this error condition should never be reached, but just in case we'll tell the user something." But when I do this sort of thing, I back it up with whatever info I have about the error - the source, a number, etc.
This seems to be more prominent/notable in Windows, but is not limited there.
