I use CNAMEs all the time.  This is really handy as I have a few dyndns
accounts, and my host.mydomain.tld is merely a CNAME for for the dyndns.
 The trick to cname records is that they must end with a period.  So an
example:

myalias IN CNAME  somehost.somedomain.tld.

Notice the trailing .
