There are several approaches you could try.

1). Softphone such as Ekiga which supports SIP, H323, and direct
connection (IP->IP).

2). VLC in stream mode.

As you are probably aware the biggest 'killer' for things like this is
network jitter, followed by latency and bandwidth.

Whatever you choose on the software side, the hardware will also have
a significant effect (my $800 DV Camcorder produces a much better image
than my $10 USB webcam).

If you can do the echo cancellation in hardware (i.e. decent speaker
phone) then that will help a lot too.


What sort of network are you attempting to work across, please don't say
Shaw residential cable ;-)
