I know I have been having some HUUUUUUUGGGE issues with shaw lately. 
E-mail, Internet access, Can't VNC in, etc.

I would definatley be looking at that as the most likely cause.  Maybe 
yelll at them and you woill get a free month! ;-)

I just hope that they don't become as crappy and useless as Telus in 
their quest to grow their service offerings.
