I agree -- this list should stay on topic, but often there's a fuzzy line there. Take my VMWare quetion for example. Is running Windows inside Linux a Linux topic? What about using Samba in a mixed environment if your question involves why a Windows box won't connect? I don't think these are OT, but some may feel differently.
Perhaps there should be a concise guideline as to what is OT and what isn't. The mailing list guidelines don't even say much, if anything about on/off topic. Though it seems obvious, perhaps it's not. If something is way OT, I'd say don't post it. If it's a grey area, it might not raise so many concerns.
