One thing:   ubuntu is using the bttv (according to dmesg) drivers.  http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Video_capture_card says that the Hauppage PVR cards use IVTV, but that my particular capture card used bttv.  This makes sense - I remember digging around for what to use with the BT848 chipset (a long time ago).
