I don't have a copy of Nero, and I do have several legit copies of
Windows...

There are a ton of open source choices, though most of the lifting is
done either by transcode or mencoder.  Both are command line and are
very powerful, but complex.  Some decent GUI front ends are (in no
particular order):
gtanscode, acidrip, OGMrip

If you go to the mplayer site there is a list of mencoder front ends.
Google will help with command line examples, simplified scripts, and
other GUI front end projects
