-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 One note on the installation tools.
Yes, we NEED more installation tools. And more distros. Here's why. Apt was at least partly created to address shortcomings with RPM. RPM was created to address shortcomings with source installs (or what ever method was before RPMs). Same thing with Portage. Debian was created to embrace the "free as in speach". Gentoo was created for the tinkerers, Ubuntu for the "average" joe. Linspire for the home user/neophyte. (I've way over simplified this...) What we are seeing is evolution in action. Good traits from distro's and package managers get adopted by the others. Bad traits get recognized more quickly, and a new solution is evolved to address that. If we apply the idea of "one distro only" to cars, we'd all be driving the same brand/model of car - which by current standards would likely be a Toyota sedan. But this sedan may not work well for farmers, or industrial workers, or those who do cross country driving, etc. We NEED different flavors to suit different needs. And these different flavors add to the evolutionary effect, which benefits everyone in the long run. The mono culture might make things easier in a lot of ways. But we'd then be stuck with something like Vista (or worse yet, MS ME or DOS) and getting DRM rammed down our throats with no say in the matter. My thoughts.
