Hi all,
Some of you may have seen mention of the levies being proposed for 2008/09. In
addition to be usual targets (tape, CD, etc) they are now (again!) 'targetting'
MP3 players.
The fee stucture for players is:
$5.00 - players up to 1GByte
$25.00 - 1GByte to 10GByte
$50.00 - 10GByte to 30GByte
$75.00 - 30GByte or more
Full details can be found at:
http://www.cb-cda.gc.ca/tariffs/proposed/c10022007-b.pdf
I am particular concerned about these outragous proposals, both due to the
perfectly legal usage of players (such as podcasts) and the way that the record
industry seems to expect money for nothing. [a Dire Straights parody is coming
to mind...]
This additional 'tax' will also have a large effect on Canadian retailers,
effectively wiping out their profit if they wish to compete with
overseas/American mail order.
I shall be writting to stress my displeasure and concerns, I urge you all to do
so as well. The address is in the above document, letters should be received by
April 11, 2007.
Cheers,
Simon.
PS. Technically CLUG, being a non-profit organisation, can apply for a
excemption (cost $15). Is this worth considering for the Linux Fest CD burning
activities?
