Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried out wink and Xvidcap.  The Recordmydesktop just didn't seem too
friendly for my environment (though I may try this another time...)

Out of the two I did try, wink doesn't seem to be suitable.  While it
has a more intuitive (though overly crowded) interface, it still boils
down to static snapshots of the desktop/focus area then squish those
together in a presentation.  I can do that with Ksnapshot and any
presentation software.  What I am looking for is a video recording of my
actions, with the option of doing a voice over.

Enter xvidcap.  It fills the requirements, and it's video seems to be
good quality, and can be adjusted.  It allows for a particular capture
rectangle to be specified (which may or may not represent the whole
screen).  It's interface is a little odd, but easily figured out.  I set
it to capture my screen, and it handled a windowed VMWare session just
fine.  (not really required, but was curious how it would go...)

Now, I guess I need to write some scripts (as in presentation scripts,
not coding scripts)... :).
