Hi Folks, I've recently migrated form Mandriva 2007 to Debian etch (testing) amd64. Overall it went very well. The new installer works beautifully, just as smooth as Mandriva, and everything seems to run better than under Mandriva. The apt-get routine is especially good at installing math packages (R, gretl) which gave me a lot of trouble under Mandriva.
However, there is one problem. Because Debian is entirely free software you can't use apt-get (or aptitude or synaptic) to install commercial software, like Moneydance. I have used Moneydance intensively for several years so I'd like to restore it under Debian. I have all the .md and .qif files. To re-install Moneydance one downloads and executes 2 binary installer files: moneydance_linux_x86.sh and moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh. The first of assumes java is already installed and, if it can't find it downloads and tries to install it. The second includes java already. In my case neither of these installers worked. moneydance_linux_x86.sh returned the following error message: "No suitable Java Virtual Machine could be found on your system. Do you want to download a JRE? (y/n) n Please define INSTALL4J_JAVA_HOME to point to a suitable JVM." moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh returned a long error message whose first two lines are "/home/robin/Moneydance/moneydance_linux_x86.sh.4700.dir/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so: libXext.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". I also installed jre-1_5_0_11-linux-amd64.bin from Sun's web site and tried to execute the installers again --- no joy. The folks at Moneydance have tried to help me but have pretty much run out of ideas. Has anyone in CLUG succeeded in installing Moneydance with Debian? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Robin Carter
