I have never used any of the tools that you mentioned, generally I try to avoid solutions that involve wine. Try DVD:RIP (dvdrip in aptitude/apt-get). It transcodes DVDs into AVIs (or other formats). I find that a reasonable bitrate xvid is more convienant than a physical disk anyway. Of course you need to make sure that you have all the proper codecs installed (the Ubuntu forums are a good place to look here).
