I have to agree with Jon.  Fetchmail is what you are looking for as far
as the consolidation of various mailboxes go.

Instant messaging is something different though.  I don't think it would
make sense to capture an "instant" message to email (cuz then it ain't
instant), but you *could* use a tool like Kopete or Gaim to consolidate
a number of instant messenger tools into one (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.)

So for mail, I think you carn rely on Fetchmail and standard IMAP/POP3
for retrieval.  This should also work with any PDA type devices.  But I
do think you'll still be using two apps - one for email, one for IM.
