I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, so use at your discretion...
In OpenOffice, goto Insert | Fields | Other to display the "Fields" window. Under tab Documents, click on type "statistics" then in "Select" click on Paragraphs. Select your format and now you can insert the paragraph code into the text. What I don't know is how to reference any of the paragraph designations other than by setting References and/or Bookmarks -- both can be found under the References tab of the "Fields" display window.
