If you have a linux router/firewall iftop and iptraf are two tools I use regularly to see whats using my bandwidth. Torrent apps in their default configuration will consume all your bandwidth, and you will see "packet loss" as a symptom. You will also have weird connectivity issues, even to web sites. What is likely doing the most harm is unregulated uploads. So if someone is grabbing a large file from you it will show the same thing.
