This is true. I had one prof. that wanted word documents so that she could
run them through a plagiarism database. I also have a problem with these
for numerous reasons. I think that I should get a royalty from the service
since they are using my work to further their business model. The other
prof. wants word documents so that she can comment the file and send it
back to me electronically. However, I prefer to submit in pdf.

That's true, but we are often required to comply with a style guide and to
write within a given number of pages. I do have profs who get upset if you
write over the maximum number of pages and this can easily appear this way
if the margins or font size get messed up.
