Well, after reading Shawn's essay yesterday, it boggles my mind that Microsoft doesn't just adopt ODF...
I was absolutely dumb-founded to see the Canadian Standards Council assuming that OOXML was an open format, just because it has the word "open" in its title. The only way Microsoft is going to change is if governments and corporations (for whom ODF is in their best interest... I don't think they want to be at the mercy of one vendor when they need to read 20 year old files) force them to, by demanding support for ODF. Wouldn't it just have been easier to do this two years ago, instead of going through all of this hand-waving about making a new standard? Sorry for the rambling, but... I agree with you Jesse, I think it's ridiculous that an institution requires submission in a proprietary format... but I also think that the only real solution to this would be for Microsoft to adopt ODF. This would require them to compete on features though, instead of simply relying on locking their customers in... so I think it'll be a cold day in hell before it happens... I certainly think it's worth the time to run through this with your professors... I doubt they're even aware of the issue, but perhaps if you can get them on your side, they might begin to at least accept ODF docs, though they'd certainly have to continue accepting Word... Perhaps I'm being unreasonable here, but I don't like the idea of schools requiring documents in a proprietary format. I know that I can save as a word document in OpenOffice, but I wouldn't mind sending it and bitching a little at the same time ;-) Jesse _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
