I have found that the upgrade process is a hit and miss experience - for
whatever OS or version. I did do an upgrade of edgy to feisty, and
things went well, except it didn't clean up the user caused problems
(and that's probably the right choice there). So I ended up blowing
away the drive and doing a clean install.

I've also had hit and miss success with the standard Ubuntu install CD.
Most boxes can run the LiveCD, but some have problems. I've never had
a problem using the Alternate Install CD/ISO, as this is a text based
(ncurses) install, and bypasses any video issues that get sorted out
later when the repositories are updated.
