That is unfortunate.  I just set up smartd for myself on the weekend.
I am using onboard Intel RAID (Intel 3000 chipset,) two drives in a
RAID1 configuration.  This was on FreeBSD, however.  I was able to
directly use /dev/ad4 and /dev/ad6 for smartd, even though the OS is
running from /dev/ar0 (raid array created from /dev/ad0 and /dev/ad6.)

I did a quick search earlier, and it looks like this method probably
will not work with megaraid on Linux.
