I am not into wrestling with getting things working either. I have a cheap Acer laptop (the Aspire 3620). This laptop actually came with a minimal Linux on it (something called Linpus), just enough to call an OS. I installed Kubuntu.
Right now I have Dapper on it 'cause of having to run VMware 1.0.3 to run that other piece of shit that MS calls an OS - Windoze XP (can you tell how thrilled I am that I have to contaminate the laptop with this?). This computer has an Intel 3915 chipset on it. Everything from the video to the wireless network card just ran out of the box. Intel has a sourceforge project for the IPW2200 and the 3915/3945 chips. This is what is delivered if the laptop has celerino support chips. If the new computer you get has either of these support chips then you can be assured that everything will work. The other chipset that has drivers that work with Kubuntu is the Atheros wireless network card. If you get a laptop with the celerino chip or pick a laptop with the atheros wireless and Nvidia (I know there are drivers for this) video then that is the least effort way to get hardware that works.
