Use a 3c905b.  They're rock solid, and very old (read well known, 
supported forever, and reliable.)

I'm looking for stability and consistency and we are still in the 
process of testing using EL5 and the new kernel and so haven't made the 
switch.

I only actually need 100Mbps as the bandwidth demands should not be 
great.
