I have been happy with the Netgear GA311 1Gb copper cards.  They have a
standard rtl-8169 chipset and have worked flawlessly for me for a couple
of years now (driver has been in the vanilla kernel for a while).

I have also been real happy with the Intel Pro1000 fiber cards that I
have.  Older Pro1000 copper cards have been good to me as well.  Some of
the newer models (the ones integrated into Intel Chipsets) require a
more recent kernel and have been sketchy on older kernels (2.6.9 is
pretty old now) and distros.
