After the last meeting there was a discussion between 3 or 4 of us about protecting network gear from lightning strikes that travel along the cat5 cables. I was browsing through XS Cargo NE yesterday and they have a "Laptop power centre" made by Radio Shack for $5. It's a power bar with in/out phone and RJ45 jacks as well. The box claims it is not intended to protect against lightning, but it's probably better than nothing and could probably be hacked to increase the ~100 joule or so network protection it provides out of the box. It's not on their website, so I can't provide a link to it.

Just FYI.
