SVN defaults into the /var directory.  As do a the standard databases 
(which has been mentioned).  But I normally override these and put them 
in /home for the reasons Rob posted.  However, my needs are very small 
and not representative of an "enterprise" solution.  There might be 
something to be said for leaving things in the default locations - could 
make long term maintenance a little easier, though I don't think it'll 
matter that much.
