Create a new user, and see if that new user can use X and gnome , i think one of the session files or socket files was left or damaged when the power went away, finding them however is more intresting. If the new user can use gnome, do an lsof | grep newuser and see (where) it puts the session and socket files, and clear those same files respective from your normal user's respective folders, and the names will be different.
