I recently purchased a GSM phone (Kaiser) which comes with a SIP phone
as well.
I've hooked it up to my Asterisk server using the built-in WiFi but
haven't tried over the cell phone data network.

I find in Canada, data pricing is way to costly to use on an ongoing basis.

I believe that these types of dual mode devices will become much more
popular. When I am in a WiFi zone, and the SIP client is registered, the
phone will automatically make calls using SIP. As soon as I am not
connected anymore, it switches back to GSM.

In the Toronto Asterisk user group mailing list, there was recently a
discussion regarding the openMOKO. I believe someone even got Asterisk
to run on an iphone - your own portable PBX in a pocket!

Keep us posted if you ever find that reasonable data plan.
