It is still selling on the majority of new PCs.  Retail sales may be
slow, but sooner or later, it will be nearly ubiquitous like XP is now.
 I also do not have faith in the market that MS will lose significant
market share.  If they do it will be to Macs.

I never did understand silly Vista versioning.  I guess they needed
something to compete with FOSS OSs on the cheap.

Bah, I had to remove xserver-xgl from my laptop, as it was glitchy and a
 resource hog (stupid gutsy upgrade turns it on by default).  The Linux
3d stuff is cool _when_ it works, but there is too much work to do
before it can compete directly.  Besides, it does not actually add any
value IMO.  It does not help me to work or play, in its current state.

Linux already has a niche on the Desktop.  :)

Most of the users I know could care less about the promised features.
Even the so called "power users" really don't care about their file
systems (or file formats).  Maybe I have a dark and pessimistic view of
those who exist in the middle of the bell curve.  That probably is more
than just possible :)
