I had the pleasure of attempting to screencast under linux, after 3 days of walking the doldrums, i setteled upon Istanbul. The software had to be oss/gpl , the output format needed to be a non patent encumbered open format, that essentially meant mpeg4 or ogg-theora , and Istanbul seems to cover all the points here. I am still open to suggestions if anyone has better experience or better ideas.
