Interesting discussion but one that sends a strong message that newbies who
want to use Linux as a desktop with plug&play shouldn't.
I have a Seagate FreeAgent 320MB that I bought (for backups) on sale ($85)
around Xmas time at MemXpress. I haven't yet plugged it into my Windows or
Linux box. Just laziness.
If you think I understand haldaemon or plugdev, guess again.
Then I read about the following problem (though there are some fixit solutions
that work for some):
Problem:

Solution(s): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=494673
I expect I can plug it into my Windows box without problems, but doing it will
be proof of the pudding. And who knows, maybe I will be lucky with Ubuntu.

haldaemon did the trick. The plugdev was already setup as a secondary
group - needed to add haldaemon. logged out, then in, and was able to
create a directory.
But my main complaint still stands. This is not "low maintenance". It
means that for every box I may use, or every user that I set up on those
boxes, I also need to add the haldaemon group. This is still better
than having to mess with file ownership/permissions though. So it's a
step in the right direction.
(I think I'm getting lazy in my old age - I just don't want to have to
fight an OS to make it do what I think it should be doing by default... :)
