Have a look at Open-Xchange, www.openexchange.com, the express edition has a 
nice ajax interface.  If you search the community section you should be able to 
find some install scripts or vms.   I used Ver. 5 in a 100 person office it 
handled everything including allowing users to sync their smart phones through 
syncml.  Had to purchase some licenses to get all the features I needed, 
however the basic groupware functions are freely available.

Horde  is  a  front  end  though.   I've  used  it  in  the  past  and  it  IS  
capable.   Just  not  too  friendly  to  get  all  setup  correctly  (but  
perhaps  
that  has  changed  since  I  looked  last).   But  it  still  needs  the  
SMTP/IMAP/POP3  server  on  the  back  end....
