After 4 years with my old P4 3.2, 2gb ram and SATA Raid on 3ware, its time for an upgrade but as I have found each time I do this, so much has changed and the selections get harder and harder.
I am very much a power user with heaving floating point work with statistical analysis, and of course a great deal of photography and panorama work/rendering so horsepower, memory bandwidth, disk performance and network speed are all critical. I also plan to re-use my Hauppauge PVR-350 so will need at least one old PCI slot. I also need dual GB nics to bond together. So, I am pretty sure I am set with the case, ps and cpu and video, but I am bit confused as to the best route for MB and SATA connection (PCI-x, PCI-e). I am pretty sure PCI-e is the way to go, If you look at the screen shots of the P5K WS, is the blue socket on the far right a PCI-e, but 16 bit or something for the video card? Are the smaller slots also PCI-e. say for the 3ware 9650SE-4LPML ? Anybody see any problems with these configurations (Windows XP, Fedora and Suse), or can suggest others? *CPU:* Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 Quad Core Processor LGA771 Yorkfield 3.2GHZ 1600FSB 12MB 45NM Retail Box http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28924&vpn=BX80574QX9775&manufacture=Intel *Case:* Coolermaster CM Stacker 830 http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26535&vpn=RC%2D830%2DKKR3&manufacture=COOLERMASTER *Video: * EVGA-GEFORCE 8800GT ($200.00)* http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27704&vpn=512-P3-N801-AR&manufacture=eVGA&promoid=1001 *MB/SATA 1:* ASUS P5K WS ATX LGA775 P35 DDR2 1PCI-E16 1PCI-X 2PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN 1394 Motherboard http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=25121&vpn=P5K%20WS&manufacture=ASUS 3WARE 9550SXU 4 Port SATA2 PCI-X RAID Controller 0/1/5/10/JBOD Low Profile ($400.00) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=25224&vpn=9550SXU%2D4LP%2DKIT&manufacture=3Ware *MB/SATA 2:* ASUS Motherboard P5E64 WS http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=82&l3=593&l4=0&model=1935&modelmenu=1 SATA Controller: ($400.00) 3WARE 9650SE-4LPML http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=333312271&vpn=9650SE%2D4LPML%20KIT&manufacture=3WARE _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
