-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have put 3ware cards into the second PCI-e slot of Intel motherboards with success. Basically if the second slot is capable of running PCI-e 4x cards you should be good to go. Most recent Intel based MBs should be fine.
At home I have a workstation class MB for my now ancient 3ware 8 port SATA card which required a PCI-X slot. This should not be required anymore. Your biggest problem is that you will be limited by the FSB, finding boards that support 1600Mhz will limit your choices. I am not sure how well those boards will work with the 3ware in the PCI-e slot. I do know that stock Intel boards work, so you *should not* have a problem here. YMMV. Personally I value stability over bleeding edge performance. I would go with a q9450 @ 2.66 Ghz (which is exactly the same chip, just clocked slower than the extreme you are looking at). $1300 for an extra 540 Mhz ~ does not add up for me. The 1600 Mhz fsb will likely help you overcome the limitations of the FSB, but the price premium for all the components does not add up for me. To put this into perspective, I am waiting for the FSB to be retired before I upgrade (likely to Intel's Nehalem). My AMD 939 based dual core is still more than I need :) Hth Johnny Stork wrote: | After 4 years with my old P4 3.2, 2gb ram and SATA Raid on 3ware, its | time for an upgrade but as I have found each time I do this, so much has | changed and the selections get harder and harder. | | I am very much a power user with heaving floating point work with | statistical analysis, and of course a great deal of photography and | panorama work/rendering so horsepower, memory bandwidth, disk | performance and network speed are all critical.
