www.link2voip.com  is based out of Edmonton,  you might have an easier time 
porting numbers with them.

I have asterisk running in a VPS that connects to them - mostly for testing 
and learning,
For softphones SJ Phone works well, they have some unresolved issues with 
XLite not registering properly.  I'm not familiar with Ekiga.

While I don't have much time logged through them to be commenting on,  I 
haven't had any issues yet with softphones connected directly to their 
servers.   Calls through my asterisk VPS are rough at times,  but I've 
attributed that to the VPS environment as the provider's default install has 
cronjobs running at specific half-hour intervals - lining up almost exactly 
with any noticed call issues.   All the VM's doing something and getting a 
fair share of the CPU at the same time doesn't bode well for a realtime 
application running on one.      But since it is mostly a test environment - 
it is okay for my purposes.
