Hey Robin,

My girlfriend has a new Dell laptop (Inspiron) and Ubuntu works well
on it.  It's not usually the brand name that matters, more often it's
what's inside.  As long as the video card is one of the popular ones,
the wireless isn't Broadcom, and he doesn't use some funky
peripherals, he should be fine.

After booting from the Kubuntu (or Ubuntu) install CD, you should have
a pretty good idea of whether it's going to work or not.  The install
CD is also a live-cd, so you should be able to see if your hardware is
supported or not before you even start the install!
