You can always rename /etc/init.d/NetworkManger so that this does not
happen.  I am not a fan of NetworkManger, but new users seem to like it.

Still far too experimental.  If you are not an experienced user I would
avoid it.  even I am avoiding it because I don't have the time to
troubleshoot right now.

The new menu is pretty, but does involve too much clicking.  I do like
the search bar, though I pretty much use Alt-F2 instead (works in GNOME,
XFCE, and KDE).

Try removing pulseaudio.  Then set your apps to use ALSA directly
(usually one of the default presets).
