First, I am not sure the goal of winning over the "unwashed masses"
should be a goal.

Second, creating a UI that does what one expects is a devilishly simple
sounding concept.  It may seem like a good idea, but I guarantee that
you and I expect different things from a UI.  I once worked on a project
where one user's feed back said that the UI should be more intuitive,
like a spreadsheet.  I am not making this up.

Of course he or she was an engineer, but it should make it clear that
getting a UI to do what one expects is a lot harder than it seems, or
else we would have it already.
