I'm not trying to "sell" Eclipse - use whatever works best for you.
Eclipse works best for me so that's what I use.

I just D/L Galileo to my windows box (it's a work thing) to get Java,
XML & CVS.

That'll probably answer some of your questions.  

For my personal work I need Java, C, XML, CVS & SVN.  With the last
version of Eclipse (Ganymede) I started with Java and needed to reach
into:
Help => Install New Software => Available Software
You can just select what you need - I added subclipse & C/C++.
