I haven't read the entire thread ... most of it though and I got to say that I haven't been riveted to CLUG thread like this, perhaps ever.
Like most of you, I've been using Linux for a while, about 10 years, never used Slack ... red hat, fedora, suse, ubuntu though. I have 4 kids the youngest 4, the oldest 13 and what I've discovered is that users do *not* use an operating system ... they use an application(s). My 4 year old can find his way through the Tree House, Nick Jr and Hasbro games websites no problem. He has no idea that he's using an Ubuntu desktop, just that his web browser works the way he wants it to. I suspect most users are like him. My 13 year old can crank out a document in Open Office or Google Docs ... no problem, change his password, print, email, etc., he's happy he doesn't have to contend with virus issues (etc) that his Windoze user friends have to (we collectively make fun of them ;-) but I'm certain he never *thinks* about the OS ... just the applications we wants to use. Can the desktop run my application? That is the question ... and for the most part, Linux (it's GUIs) does a pretty good job for the average (and above average) user IMO. Just my observation.
