You only need this if you are manually installing the driver.  It is
probably best if he uses the facilities of his distro or else he will
have problems whenever his kernel is updated (not a big deal, more
annoying than anything.  This is what I did when I had to suffer with
nVidia hardware).

On GNOME there is a "hardware drivers" applet in "System ->
Administration" where you can configure the restricted hardware drivers.
 I am not sure if KDE 4 has an equivalent application.

You can always install these things via apt/aptitude/synaptic etc.

sudo aptitude search nvidia
will show you which packages are available for install.  Use whatever
package manager you prefer.  There are a number of different driver
versions available, I believe that the Vanta is considered a "legacy"
device by nVidia, so you may need to consult the nvidia.com site to
figure out which driver to use.
