That is exactly what it is.  I have deployed a few routerOS devices and
they are solid.

Well, it is an appliance, so unless you do an update, the kernel version
does not change.

IIRC the kernel versions tend to be newer than what you find in
Debian/Stable

Routerboard is similar to Soekris or PC Engines, except that the CPU
architecture is different (and cheaper).  Most Routerboard devices you
can put whatever OS you want on them, as long as its supports the MIPS
CPU.

Having said that, this device may not be designed this this way and may
be missing the needed the headers.  For $40 I would not be surprised if
they did away with the RS-232 headers.

I personally use SBCs made by PC Engines as they are AMD Geodes so just
about any x86 OS will work.
