I recently applied updates to my Ubuntu 9.04 system and as usual had to reconfigure VMware. The /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl script completed normally (after some dicking around), and I can log into the vmware console and start VMs, but they all have difficulty using the bridged network (which worked before the updates). There are all set to "connect at power on" but the guest OS says no link, and vmware console has this event "Message from HAL: The network bridge on device vmnet0 is not running. The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet1. " This message is in contradiction to the diagnostic message below that "Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 is running".
I've googled around and don't see an obvious solution. Everything appears to be working normally as the following diagnostics show: If anyone has seen this before or better yet has a resolution, I'd be very thankful. g...@hal:/etc/vmware/hostd$ sudo service vmware restart Stopping VMware autostart virtual machines: Virtual machines done Stopping VMware management services: VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access VMware Server Host Agent done Stopping VMware services: VMware Authentication Daemon done VM communication interface socket family: done Virtual machine communication interface done Virtual machine monitor done Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 done Host network detection done Virtual ethernet done Starting VMware services: Virtual machine monitor done Virtual machine communication interface done VM communication interface socket family: done Virtual ethernet done Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 done VMware Server Authentication Daemon (background) done Shared Memory Available done Starting VMware management services: VMware Server Host Agent (background) done VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access Starting VMware autostart virtual machines: Virtual machines done g...@hal:/etc/vmware/hostd$ lsmod|grep vm vmnet 54092 0 vmci 65192 1 vsock vmmon 85328 0 g...@hal:/etc/vmware/hostd$ sudo service vmware status Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 is running Host network detection is not running Module vmmon loaded Module vmnet loaded g...@hal:/etc/vmware/hostd$ ps -ef|grep vmware root 5763 1 0 03:33 pts/0 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/vmware-watchdog -s webAccess -u 30 -q 5 /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/java/jre1.5.0_15/bin/webAccess -client -Xmx64m -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=30 -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=30 -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/common/endorsed -classpath /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/bin/bootstrap.jar:/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/bin/commons-logging-api.jar -Dcatalina.base=/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16 -Dcatalina.home=/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16 -Djava.io.tmpdir=/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/temp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap start root 5912 1 0 03:33 ?
