Thanks Gustin. I'm sorry I missed your last talk re this subject at
CLUG. I am becoming somewhat disillusioned about VMware too. I've
started playing with Virtualbox but may consider ESXi down the road. So
far Virtualbox looks pretty good, but it is early times for me.
Just one word of caution with the VMWare ESX family is that the client
software to manage VMs is only supported by Windows. Worse to access the
console of a given VM, the Vsphere client seems to make use of DirectDraw,
which means that it does not work from inside a VirtualBox VM for me (wine
on my x64 based system does not seem to be able to support 3d, and this is
what Virtualbox uses for rendering).
For Desktop use (ie. in cases where I would traditionally reach for VMWare
Workstation or Player) I tend to favour Virtualbox. The exception is when
I have to manage ESX with the VSphere client, and so I have a VM that I
run inside of VMWare Player (I have now completely given up on the VMWare
Workstation product)._______________________________________________
