I know this isn't a direct answer to your issue, but the Ubuntu forums, being based on Debian, may be of some help. I got it working under (K)Ubuntu fairly easily if I remember correctly. Under Fedora, from a user / non-professional perspective, I remember it being a little painful. This is all a little fuzzy right now - it's been a while since I had to mess with this. I know I had to try several packages before I got it working. I've got a full day today, but if you're having trouble still by late this evening, send me the specific version of Debian you're using. I'll try to spin up a virtual system and walk through the process.
