did you try 'startx'? And btw, upgrades or dist-upgrades should be done without kde running (or gnome etc.). '/etc/init.d/kdm stop', log in as root and then 'apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade'. Otherwise you are going to upgrade packages that are running at the time and you can often break things this way. Also, if you are using a ATI or nvidia card with proprietary drivers, you will need to re-install the driver if X or the kernel is upgraded.
