I had some dual layer media a little while ago, but had a high failure rate. I have not tried in a couple of years since burned disks make for terrible backup media and I have better solutions for temp file storage.
I personally use k3b for burning, but I am pretty sure most of the programs use the same backend to do the heavy lifting so I would be surprised if it performed any better. You may wish to try a different burner, the log messages would lead me to look at hardware issues.
