Hey Joe,

I have had the same concerns as you over the years & it took me a few
years to finally make the move towards online banking. Now...I find it
far more convenient & we pretty much do all of our banking online.

My wife & I have RBC & I use BMO for my business accounts. The security
on pretty much everything is pretty much as the highest possible level
that it can be, not to mention the amount of additional security
questions & other things are required (sometimes to much if you ask
me)...haven't asked me for my DNA for the alien-human hybrid
program....YET!!!

For me it now comes down to services, ease of use, live customer
service, etc. One of the key things I like is the ability to download
PDF's of my statements, customization & other options. I can speak very
highly for RBC in all of those regards, but not so much for BMO. I just
find that they don't really seem interested in moving forward into the
digital age & have had many service issues over the years. But...I have
a screaming deal on my account right now, so not looking to change &
essentially make it work.

>From a smartphone app perspective, both of them are pretty good & I
haven't seen many issues so far. Yours or other peoples mileage on this
may vary...but I am trying to do some specific things, so I look for
function more than anything else...in short...does it get me to my goal
in an effective & efficient manner.

I have used online banking on all three platforms & haven't seem much
difference between any of them...which should be expected. The biggest
things to remember from a paranoia perspective...make sure that your are
using an SSL encrypted connection, make sure you log out...and review
your statements. Obviously nothing is perfect & you can't ultimately be
guaranteed that nothing will ever happen...but I personally haven't
experienced any issues (save one phantom charge on a charge card...which
was resolved quickly).

I don't know if this means anything...but I have recently started moving
in purchasing some items online as well as well as paying some bills
(i.e. wives seatbelt ticket) at non-bank sites as well.
Again...diligence...observation & personal responsibility & review are
your friends.

HTH!
