apart from the capabilities of your platform, there is no artificial
limit.

that would mostly be a waste of resources: you'd have to lay out, paint
and reference thousands - or maybe more - actors. plus all the other
actors that compose the "chrome" of your UI.

one solution - which is similar to what GtkTextView does - is to use a
PangoLayout for each paragraph of text; this means that you'll have to
implement a new text actor.
