Yes, it crossed my mind, though I'd rather leave scene-graphing to clutter! But if needs must...

you could perhaps reparent the "odd actors out" to a
different group temporarily, and apply a different opacity to that
group.
You are reading my mind. I don't dare look around, you're probably standing right behind me! :)

If only I could understand these cogl materials. I get the feeling I can give an actor a kind of 'skin' (I am thinking materials like they are used in Blender 3D) which is reactive to light (say) so that I can switch materials around - or something - and the effect of a material will be to make the whole actor look 'dimmed' or 'normal'.

I'll hack-on and see where I land.
