1.5.8 is a (fairly old) development version, so I can't really say
anything but "update to a stable one or downgrade to the previous stable
release".

even if I were able to tell you what the problem is, which I can't, you'd
still have to update to another release.

it's not pango_layout_get_extents() the culprit: the layout pointer that
it is receiving is obviously invalid.
